Should you buy a monthly MBTA Charlie Card?
Harvard offers a 50% discount on MBTA Charlie Cards, and can be purchased online. Sign up once, and your Charlie Card will be mailed to your home. This will be your permanent Charlie Card. The money deducted from your pay for an MBTA pass will be applied to the Charlie Card each month. As an added bonus, the price for the pass will be deducted from your paycheck before taxes, which for many people will mean a final savings of over 60%!
What is the enrollment procedure?
Visit www.commuterchoice.harvard.edu and click on “Buy your MBTA pass Online”, or call 1-800-462-2235 to request a paper order form. The order deadline for online enrollment is the first day of the month prior to the month of use. For example, March 1 is the deadline to order your April pass online. Paper form submissions must be received by the 25th of the month prior to the month of use. For example, submit your paper form by February 25th for an April pass. If you want to stop using your Charlie Card or to change the kind of plan you receive, that’s easy to do online. But in general, once you enroll, you won’t have to think about it again unless you want to make a change.
New employees must allow from 5-9 weeks from the start of their employment to receive their first MBTA pass.
How do I return my parking permit to become eligible for a discounted MBTA pass?
If you would like to make a smooth transition from a parking permit to an MBTA pass, you must begin the process 9 weeks in advance. If a parking permit is returned during the third week of February, for example, a discounted MBTA pass can be obtained for the month of April. When you return your parking permit, please be sure to tell the Parking Office staff that you are returning your permit because you would like to begin receiving a discounted MBTA pass. You will be issued a temporary parking permit for the following month, and begin receiving a discounted MBTA pass the month after that.
Note: You will be able to access the online MBTA pass purchasing web site through the link at www.commuterchoice.harvard.edu within 8 calendar days of returning your parking permit.
